Room 2 (Main Hall) – The Mittelland Canal

The Mittelland Canal, at nearly 400 km in length, is the longest artificial waterway in Germany. It connects several rivers to one another, thereby enabling European shipping traffic between the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Near Magdeburg, the canal crosses the Elbe River on an imposing canal bridge measuring 43 meters wide and 4 meters deep, suspended 8 meters above the river. In this way, a river intersection is created that could never exist in nature: two waterways crossing at different levels.

A series of drawings depicts the river landscape surrounding the waterway intersection.

The tapestries made from PVC tubing contain water from the Mittelland Canal.
