WHAT REMAINS OF THE SNOW IN MILAN

13 January and 7 February
Casa Testori

Filming white means chasing what is about to emerge and what is about to vanish: snow, fog, and light as shifting thresholds where images take shape. White is the color of marble, from whose carving the artist’s gesture powerfully surfaces.

The workshop with Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti — the documentary duo who have redefined the new Italian cinema of the real with rigorous and visionary works presented and awarded in Competition at the Venice Film Festival, the Berlinale, the Locarno Film Festival, IDFA, and major international festivals — unfolds across two complementary sessions, designed to introduce participants to their cinematic world and guide them through a creative journey linked to the historic snowfall of 15 January 1985.

The first session, on 13 January, will be devoted to a theoretical reflection on white as a color in their cinema: through the shared viewing of selected sequences — from the milky, impenetrable fog enveloping Malpensa Airport in The Castle, to the carved, dusty white marble of the cathedral under construction in The Never-Ending Factory of the Duomo, to the white, rarefied geometries of Bestiaries, Herbariums, Lapidaries — the duo will analyze their use of white as a space of suspension, memory, and transformation. This will be followed by a visit to the Mario De Biasi photography exhibition, allowing participants to connect the filmic gaze to archival images and to discuss early shooting ideas.

In the second session, on 7 February, the work becomes more hands-on: participants will bring the material gathered during January — observations, attempts, and footage inspired by the 1985 photographs — and will engage directly with the filmmakers in a collective viewing and feedback session. A process that alternates thought and practice, memory and present, leaving room for the unpredictability of the winter landscape and the narrative possibilities that snow continues to evoke.

The works will be presented in a special screening at Casa Testori on 28 February.

The workshop is curated by Daniela Persico and Tea Paci, in collaboration with www.filmidee.it
