CHIAROSCURO

The performance CHIAROSCURO tells the story of Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.

“On November 29, 1612, shortly after the unhappy conclusion of the trial in which she was vindicated but Agostino Tassi faced no punishment, Artemisia married Pierantonio Stiattesi, a painter of modest reputation. She followed him to Florence, thus freeing herself from her oppressive father and her painful past. In Florence, a city thriving with artistic energy under the enlightened rule of Cosimo II, Artemisia found success and built a wide network of influential relationships. Among her Florentine friends were leading figures such as Galileo Galilei and Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, nephew of the famous artist. Her merits were finally recognized when, on July 19, 1616, she was admitted to the prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno — the first woman ever granted this honor.”

Through the voices of five female performers, the dramatic and extraordinary life of Artemisia Gentileschi unfolds. Singing and storytelling intertwine as each performer takes on aspects of Artemisia’s persona, gradually forming a powerful chorus of women’s voices that evoke her thoughts, emotions, and inner strength through song.
