On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Casa Testori hosted a talk with Antonio Grulli, curator and art critic, on a theme both fascinating and central to Giovanni Testori’s work: how can poetry serve as a form to reach the heart of a visual artwork?
In conversation with Giuseppe Frangi, Grulli shared the results of a research project carried out thanks to a grant from the Italian Ministry of Culture.
The title of Antonio Grulli’s research, part of the 12th edition of the Italian Council, is “Art Criticism and Poetry Today”—a study of critics who are also poets and poets who are also art critics, tracing a path from Dante to Testori. A key turning point in this investigation is found in some of Roberto Longhi’s methodological writings, which opened the way to a more cross-disciplinary vision of art criticism: the ekphrasis achieved through poetic language. It is worth recalling that Testori himself often used poetry as a form of critical writing—as in his book “Maddalena”, where he interpreted artworks through poems that serve as captions.
The discussion was interspersed with readings of Testori’s poems dedicated to artists he deeply studied and loved—Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Bacon, and Morandi—performed by Sebastian Luque Herrera, one of the actors from BAT_Bottega Amletica Testoriana.
