Aleksander Velišček, THE LITTLE ALBANIAN
Aleksander Velišček’s painting is the continuous superimposition of layers of matter that become increasingly dense on the canvas, until it is so charged that it seems to be unable to hold the colour, until it is a concrete painting as sculpture. Velišček accumulates oil just as the weight of history accumulates: he often represents power – political, intellectual, sporting, media – in the faces of those who have marked nations, starting with his own Slovenia. The Little Albanian is the portrait of a fellow student of the artist’s, short in stature but depicted as a giant of almost five metres. A milestone in his education, which it was necessary to represent as such.
